FRTM - Recap - Toastmasters 10/4/18 Meeting

The theme of tonight's meeting was Fall. Toastmaster was Pattie.

Sergeant At Arms Robin opened the meeting on time, and conducted the
logistics with aplomb.

President Jennifer then conducted the business portion of the meeting. We
inducted new member Monica Warstler. Welcome, Monica!

Ah Counter was Alan.
Monica jumped right in as substitute Grammarian, providing Word of the Day
"garrulous".
Jennifer provided Inspiration.
Lori was Quizmaster.
Timer/Joker was Jeff.

We had two speakers, Kathleen and Jennifer. They were evaluated,
respectively, by Michael and Dirk. Kathleen passionately exhorted us to
check out escape rooms, an event which groups can share right here in
Denver. (Aside: by coincidence, Yours Truly had noticed one of these just
last week while driving, and we have a group forming to try it out. Let us
know if you want to join in!)

Jennifer shared with us the work of Nobel Laureate Eleanor Ostrom, which
explains the eight factors necessary to having successful groups. She
pointed out that we all belong to groups within work, family, community and
service projects. Most of those could function better, and Ostrom shows how.

Table Topics was led by Robin. He did a superb job of asking fall-related
questions and injecting levity into the proceedings. (If you are wondering
why all of this delayed praise of Robin is appearing here, read on.)

General Evaluator was Yours Truly. Although the GE is usually above
criticism, as Secretary I will take that liberty with *this particular *GE,
who is not expected to complain. The GE did not check with the Evaluators
in advance to make sure they were ready, and there was a snafu among our
less experienced Evaluator/Speaker. Easily averted in future. Also, the GE
failed to mention someone's stellar performance as Sergeant At Arms and as
Table Topics Master.

In fact, the GE finished the meeting with the nagging suspicion that he had
forgotten to evaluate someone. Afterwards, he approached Dirk and Robin to
ask if they knew who he was forgetting. Robin responded, "If that person
was standing right in front of you, would you recognize him?" Thinking this
a joke (for which Robin is well-known), Yours Truly said "no". Robin then
pointed out the obvious, and a good laugh was shared.

Michael gave an evaluation of Kathleen's speech that was as passionate as
the speech itself. (Aside: What is it with these two new members? Could
they be excited to be here or something?) If the audience wasn't excited
about escape rooms from the speech, they surely were after the evaluation!

Dirk gave a solid, professional evaluation of Jennifer's *speech*, which
accomplished the admittedly difficult task of finding improvements for her
to keep in mind. (Aside: Since Jennifer's speech will become part of her
larger talk, that feedback was especially appreciated. If you would like to
attend Jennifer's speech, "Thriving in the Future: Solutions for
Technological Unemployment". here are the details: 6:30 - 8:30 PM Monday
Octiber 8, Da Vinci Institute, 9191 Sheridan Boulevard #300, Westminster,
CO 80031. This is a talk in the *DaVinci Future Speakers Series*. )

Ah Counter Alan had a challenging evening in that few of us in various
ways. Still, it was precise and personal.

As Grammarian, Monica gave detailed and personal feedback on grammar uses
and misuses. Good job, Monica!

Quizmaster Lori chose questions that were lively and "just right"--not too
difficult and not too easy.

We again did not have a Gesture Master.

Pattie did a solid job of keeping things moving along, including
interesting anecdotes about Fall (AKA Autumn in Britain, formerly known as
Harvest before the US was a country. Also, leaves on the East Coast turn
brilliant colors because of their high sugar content. Who knew? Well,
someone did.)
