Just wanted to give an update. The bug as described above still persists
in hrev49173, but the crashes after trying to connect a few times seem to
occur less often (I think).
Every time when trying to connect, in the Network preferences the status
of the ralinkwifi/0 changes to "connected (---)" and a notification comes
up saying "Configuring". After a couple of seconds it goes back to
"disconnected".
I am attaching some crash reports. Is there any other information (maybe
some wifi supplicant log somewhere) that I could attach?
