On Diver's advice I switched the Adapter Type in vbox from the default
"PCnet-FAST III (Am79C973)" to the "Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (8254OEM)"
adapter and everything went smoothly. Transferred all ~133,000 files
(~3.6GB or something) without any problem.
With the PCnet adapter it never made it more than a few hundred files at a
time.
