I don't think blackness is the problem here. Have you tried this with
other screensavers? Have you tried unchecking the "turn off screen"
checkbox?
I have noticed that when there is a system panic or app_server crash we
don't wake up the display from powersaving mode. Can you reach the machine
by ssh and get a syslog, ps output, or other useful information after it
is crashed?
Also, what is your video card and driver?
