Manually setting PKG_CONFIG_LIBDIR each time I swap from GCC2 to GCC4
wouldn't have been an acceptable solution, although nice to know about.
Also worth knowing is that most Linux packages look for PKG_CONFIG_PATH so
setting that can help build them.
I installed pkgconfig_x86 and the issue seems to have resolved, thanks.
