The backtraces aren't really useful, that's just the kernel freaking out
about losing the disk.

Which version of VMWare Fusion are you doing these latest tests on? During
my testing I used qemu, VirtualBox 5.0, real IvyBridge Intel machines, and
AMD SB6xx.

Syslogs with the AHCI drive configuration + emulator information are the
most helpful thing.
