 OK, so giving up on the virtual memory exhaustion issue for now, I
 switched to x86_64 and the build process works right up until the creation
 of the final `emacs` binary, which segfaults and fails.  This exact
 problem is listed here:

 So it might have something to do with position-independent code now.
