As for managing several versions of a library: it is up to the library
provider to make versionned releases of its library. For example you can
see that we have "libmikmod.so.3.3.0", "libffi.so.6.0.1", etc (random
examples from my /system/lib).
If liblayout did the same, then different versions would have different
names and would not conflict with each other. But currently it is not the
case, and knowing if a particular version is compatible with your software
is only possible by testing it.
