 I poked around with profiles more, using QCachegrind to dive through them
 instead of the more basic "profile" output. Unfortunately I didn't really
 notice anything more in particular that could be leading to this. Probably
 the trick is going to be figuring out what causes memory usage to spike
 and then drop, which at least does not seem to be discernable from the
 profiling results.

 The scheduling_recorder may help, though. Did anyone try that yet?
