The very first boot from the flash drive froze after the little 'rocket
 ship' lit up.

 This almost certainly means the problem is not USB3 related at all; USB3
 problems occur during the "storage" icon, and if you get past that, then
 it means USB3 initialization has at least succeeded.

 "Rocket ship" icon stalls usually mean the graphics driver failed
 initialization. Try using the "fail safe graphics" option in the
 bootloader.
