 OK, I have some clues, although I'm not sure how relevant this is to
 anyone except on my particular case.

 I was fiddling around with some Linux distros and found that they would
 not boot if I had installed any kind of persistent image to the USB flash
 drive. They would boot fine without persistence, but with persistence I
 would get various errors, depending on the distro but usually something
 about not being able to mount something.

 The thing is, they would boot with persistence and everything when I
 switched out the nvidia card with the old card. So obviously there's some
 sort of conflict with the nvidia card and the usb, but beyond that is
 above my head.
