 Patches 1-3 do the preparatory work and could be applied right away.

 Patch 4 is an updated RFC: Setting mode and depth has been removed, they
 are not strictly needed since OpenFirmware initializes the screen. My old
 VGA-connected screen has some EDID issue, so that OpenFirmware uses odd-
 looking 832x624 resolution; on my other DVI-connected screen the native
 resolution 1280x1024 is used. In both cases the depth is 8 bit by default.

 The [source:haiku/trunk/src/system/kernel/arch/ppc/arch_platform.cpp#L167
 "serial debug" kernel output] leads to half-transparent text output in
 8-bpp mode and to a grayish distortion in 32-bpp mode. Still have to find
 a condition to suppress the output.
