#7970: Keyboard Intents ----------------------------------+---------------------------- Reporter: sffjunkie | Owner: axeld Type: enhancement | Status: new Priority: normal | Milestone: R1 Component: Preferences/Keymap | Version: R1/Development Resolution: | Keywords: Blocked By: | Blocking: Has a Patch: 0 | Platform: All ----------------------------------+---------------------------- Comment (by axeld): I don't really see why Emacs keybindings would be useful, besides that you must not reuse any Alt-* combinations since those may break applications (Alt-F is usually "find" btw). But the fact that you find Emacs keybindings useful (while I might prefer Vi style) shows that intents like suggested might be a good idea. And indeed there isn't a single useful text editor that I know of that isn't completely configurable to the user's needs (wants). BTextView is a good example of why such a mechanism might be useful system wide, and it would already serve as a solution to use for applications that wants to have their shortcuts configurable. If done properly, all text editors could make behave the same by default (including BTextView) which alone would be a very nice thing to have. Another reason for having such a system are different keymaps and keyboard layouts - what works well in one combination, might be very annoying in another. And best of all, you wouldn't need to use it at all, if you see no value in it ;-) -- Ticket URL: <http://dev.haiku-os.org/ticket/7970#comment:2> Haiku <http://dev.haiku-os.org> Haiku - the operating system.
