It absolutely supports the 5GHZ band, not just the main band but the DFS channels as well. 802.11N is a communication standard for WiFi that has several components including multi MIMO support and antenna diversity etc. It can be delivered on both 2.4 or 5GHZ. The newer Macbook Pros like the 2013 and later support AC networking or 802.11AC. This uses 5GHZ and has features like beam forming which directs the single at you instead of in all directions. Your Macbook though definitely supports 5GHZ and if you have a router that supports this you should definitely use it.
