Actually, it’s not needed though. The padding just breaks down over time, the
tabs fall off and it gets brittle anyway. You also get stretching so the skin
doesn’t fit as well over time.
I have an iPad air2 that I use on my boat in a life proof case. South
of the tip of Long Island we ran in to 10 foot seas and the iPad flew off the
console and crashed in to the deck which is this really hard fiber glass /
carbon fiber material. Not a scratch or even so much as a blip. The footprint
of the iPad is also barely impacted with a tight skin around it. I would never
attempt that with an otter box simply because of the lack of waterproofing.
The funny thing is here, otter box owns life proof so it’s the same company
making the products. It’s nice they have different options for different
tastes.
As for thinness, I hate phones that are bricks. Electronics is getting thinner
and lighter and faster. Eventually it’s going to just disappear in to the
environment. You’re one of a few people who don’t care, me personally I like
the thinness and improvement in performance. I’m glad I’m not living in the
1980s any more.;)

Well, the padding is there for a purpose, it's to protect the device.
I just don't get the obsession with everything having to be ultra
slim.
