This sort of simplifies the history, but accurate enough. The reality is
a lot of the early computer pioneers knew each other quite well. They were, at
one time, all friends, so there always has been a connection present.
Additionally, when Steve Jobs left Apple initially, that was when the company
started to sink and make some really stupid business decisions that were not
rectified until his return.

Upon his return in 1999, he had what he calls a "road map" in mind, and
the company has stuck to that each step forward they have taken. As the
article says, in some ways, it's actually been easy to predict where Apple is
going as far as how one thing has built on the next. It's very rare that you
have someone who truly thinks outside of the box and who has the long term
vision that can guide a company and an entire philosophy step by step into the
future. It's really a very simple philosophy, and it's astounded me that all
of the other technology companies spend their time trying to catch up and do
better than what Apple has already done successfully. It just doesn't work,
because Apple always starts and ends with the user experience. Plain and
simple.

Yes, in essence, Microsoft saved Apple's bacon at the time, but also
consider that at the time, the situation was far different and it was an
investment as far as Microsoft was concerned. And don't think that they have
not made money on it either. As much as Apple is eating Microsoft's lunch and
dinner these days, MS got their money back in spades since 2001.
