Your phone is capable of field test mode, as someone else mentioned you have to 
enter the symbols correctly.
        That being said to clear up the other confusion, yes, your phone is 
GSM.  SOme subsets of that include HSPA and it's variants which are a means of 
high speed packet access for data and voice networks.  This is also sometimes 
called 3G or 3.5G.  There are a bunch of HSPA protocols and your carrier 
probably supports a decent subset of them similar to AT&T does in the US.
        LTE, long term evolution is an extension of GSM that supports higher 
speed access more efficiently and handles more phones at the same time much 
more effectively.  Your 4S does not support LTE.  If you had a 5 or 5S you'd 
use that functionality.
