Well, the funny thing is that it does work sometimes. I wonder if there is a
specific set of steps one can take to get it to happen. It is so tedious to try
to set a new appointment when I have to step through the entire calendar to
see which days might be open since events can just be some random holiday put
there.

Good question. The list option doesn't seem to work in Month View for the
calendar app. I believe it used to. I'm not sure what happened to it.
