Hi Jason,
   I haven’t used Daisy readers enough to know what might be happening.  It 
might just be a problem in the app itself.

   As for your second question, Preview comes built into the Mac OS and can 
read PDF files.  You can also get Skim or Stanza as well.  Note that if the PDF 
files are images, you will need to OCR them before you can read them at all.
