We have had this discussion on list previously as to the best OCR package to
use and the vote seems to come down to either Docuscan or Finereader Pro, both
available from the Mac Apps Store.
I had some experience with a very poorly scanned manual this morning which
prompted me to add more comments to the OCR mix.
I tried 3 different OCR solutions with the manual and usually I only need to
use one OCR solution with 99% of documents I scan, my preferred OCR package
being Docuscan for Windows and Mac.
However with the manual concerned Docuscan may as well have crashed completely,
left it running for half an hour without OCR results being displayed.
The same problem with the Convenient - or inconvenient if you like - OCR
Function of JAWS though JAWS did give me some indication as to where the
problem with the scan may like as it reported that the scan was of very poor
resolution and I may get poor OCR results.
Well at least I got results but reading them was somewhat of a challenge.
I was about to give the whole project away when I remembered I had purchased
Finereader Pro from the Mac Apps store quite some time ago but hadn’t
downloaded it so thought I may as well install and run the document through it.
The change was absolutely astounding to say the least.
Yes, Finereader did take some time to recognise the document and I thought my
efforts would once again be wasted.
I exported to a text file and had the document load into iText pro and.. well..
the document pretty much read as though someone had typed it.
Yes, there are a few places in the document spoilt by multi-lingual text and
diagrams but at least I can make sense of much of what I’m skimming through.
