Yes, it sounds like you most likely muted speech accidentally. Provided
Trackpad commander is turned on, a three finger double tap toggles speech off
and on. If you turn VoiceOver off with command-F5 and then turn it back on,
VoiceOver should immediately say, “VoiceOver muted”, which will definitely
prove if this is the case.
