[mac4theblind] audio editing, where to start?

Hi.
If I want to be able to use my mac to edit audio files, mix, adding
effects and such things, what is the best way to start?
I've tried out the trial of amadeus pro but I don't understand much.
I understood more when I tried sound forge on the pc.
