Logitech bluetooth keyboards in most cases do not need to use their dongles but
work with bluetooth natively. They include one in case you don’t have a
bluetooth radio. Now not all are this way there are some that do have
proprietary dongles so you might try one that doesn’t have that requirement if
you’re sure yours is one of these type.
If Voiceover doesn’t have a monitor attached it can go sideways. This is why
some plug monitor dongles in to their Mini. I can’t see how running with the
top open is an issue. You wouldn’t want to run with the top closed anyway
because it’s likely to over heat. A lot of cooling can happen through the keys
and surrounds around the m monitor and laptop as well as the monitor itself
generates heat and isn’t designed to be on when closed or if it auto disables
might well be blocking vents that need to be open.
Run it open as designed.

Since upgrading to Sierra I have found a couple of bugs in VoiceOver and
wondered if anyone else is experiencing this. First, when in email, for some
reason my mailbox list was hidden, which I guess is the default unless you
choose otherwise. Also, is there a reason that we can’t use our MacBooks with
external keyboards with the lid closed without VoiceOver hanging? I tested
this when my Mac was hooked to an external monitor and never had a problem
with this. What makes it different when I’m just using the laptop screen as
the monitor? Really wish I didn’t have to open the lid every time. Also, does
anyone know of a keyboard that is full-sized that doesn’t require a dongle to
connect or a USB cable? Most of the bluetooth keyboards I have found are
great, but don’t include the numpad and home and end keys etc. I have the
Logitech keyboard that is full-sized, but it uses a dongle to connect to the
Mac.************
