I’ve been struggling with this and here’s the fix that works for me.

In Classic view, there is a vertical splitter between the mailbox table and the 
messages table. This should stay where it is.

Beneath the messages table there is a horizontal splitter. This divides the 
message headers from the body or preview pane. If you want to get rid of the 
preview pane, you have to get this horizontal splitter to the bottom of the 
window. For me, the easiest way to do this is to bring the mouse to the 
horizontal splitter then press one finger on the track pad and drag it down the 
way. This drags the horizontal splitter to the bottom of the window.

You can check whether you are successful by going to the horizontal splitter 
and doing VO-Down Arrow. The horizontal splitter should be the last item with 
nothing below it.
For me, since I can vertically wrap, the close button is the next thing 
downward if successful.
This closes the preview pane finally.
