There are a ton of great web sites out there with ideas. You could do a
selection of short experiments alternating with longer ones. One of my
favorite short experiments is to take apart a diaper, pull out the cotton
lining, shake it in a baggie and separate out the polyacrylate crystal that
fall to one corner. Then place the crystals in the bottom of a small
plastic cup and add water very slowly - think one Tablespoon at a time- and
see it expand like crazy. For longer ones you could check out web sites
that give suggestions for science fair experiments. In a camp setting you
might not be able to do long term seed or crystal growth, but you could
still do simple "which fruit is more acidic" type experiments. Also I would
try to get some physics / engineering labs in there. Kids love doing things
with magnets. The older kids could try to build an egg drop machine. Going
to Science Olympiad competition sites might give you some ideas as well. If
I get a chance to do some web searches I will email some specific url's to
you directly Sandy.

Good luck. Try to keep your prep, consumables, and equipment to a minimum
and I bet it will be really fun.

Jerusha

Subject: [neact] Elementary Science Curriculum

I have been asked to help with a Science Camp this summer. Since most
of my teaching has been with college students, I could use help with
devising age appropriate activities. There are 3 different age
groups, 5-8, 9-11, 12-13. The camp lasts for 8 weeks and they will do
3 sessions of 2 hours in each week.

Any help with curriculum and hands on activities would be appreciated.
They need to encompass areas of science besides chemistry.

Thank you for your help.
