In The News:

NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF STATE SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS COALITIONS News Brief #4255 Category: Teacher Preparation TITLE: "Amazing Teacher Facts" The evidence is mounting that for prospective teachers knowledge of subject matter is more important than years of education courses. A study by the Urban Institute compares the impact of graduates of Teach for America with those of teachers in general adds to the data undergirding such conclusions. Not surprisingly, it finds that subject matter knowledge is especaily important for teachers of math and science. NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF STATE SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS COALITIONS News Brief #4256 Category: Education Policy TITLE: "More Schools Trying Separation of the Sexes" A trend that began with separation of boys and girls in middle school science classes continues, as more elementary schools are experimenting with single sex instruction. Some 500 elementary schools nationwide are known to be involved. Evidence of the effectiveness of the efforts at the elementary level is still rather thin, however, and few schoools are reporting the sorts of marked improvements that were seen in middle school science programs run by organizations such as the Boston Museum of Science. NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF STATE SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS COALITIONS News Brief #4259 Category: Education Policy TITLE: "Report Sees Cost in Some Academic Gains" According to a study just released by the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, gains in 4th grade reading scores made by the lowest 10 percent of students have come at the expense gains by the highest 10 percent. The analysis and data used to back up this assertion will need to be closely examined before deciding anything about its validity, since (a) concerns this sort of impact have been around since the very beginning of the No Child Left Behind Act; and (b) since NCLB was implemented precisely to bring up the bottom end, it would harldy be surprising if it had had that impact. From NSTA: Student Achievement Higher With NBPTS-Certified Teachers, Says NRC Report: A new report from the National Research Council concludes that advanced certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is an effective way to identify highly skilled teachers and that students taught by NBPTS-certified teachers make greater gains on achievement tests than students taught by teachers who are not board-certified. The report is unclear whether the certification process itself leads to higher quality teaching and whether earning board certification affects teachers' decisions to stay in the teaching profession. There is no evidence that districts or schools are encouraging board-certified teachers to work in difficult schools or mentor other teachers and in some cases, administrators have discouraged board-certified teachers from assuming responsibilities outside the classroom. Created in 1987, the nonprofit National Board for Professional Teaching Standards developed standards for what effective teachers should know and be able to do, along with a process to evaluate whether individual teachers meet these criteria. To earn certification, a teacher must complete six computer-based exercises and assemble a portfolio that shows how his or her teaching meets the standards. From 1993 through 2007, 99,300 teachers applied for NBPTS certification, and 63,800 earned the credential.
