Subject: National Academy of Sciences report on DBER

Good afternoon,

It is with great pleasure that I call your attention to a report released today
by the National Academy of Sciences via the National Research Council Board on
Science Education:

http://www8.nationalacademies.org/onpinews/newsitem.aspx?RecordID=13362

The report, entitled "Discipline-Based Education Research: Understanding and
Improving learning in Undergraduate Science and Engineering," prominently
features chemistry education research (CER), as well as physics (PER), biology
(BER), engineering (EER), geology (GER), and astronomy (AER) education
research,
collectively under the umbrella term of "DBER" (pronounced dee-ber).

I would urge you to read this report and share it broadly with your grad
students, post-docs, faculty colleagues, P&T committees, department chairs,
deans, etc. Please note the rules for sharing NRC reports:

http://www.nap.edu/content/help/about_pdf.html

You can download your own PDF of the report free of charge at

http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=13362

but should not distribute the pdf yourself. You may, however, circulate the
URL,
put a widget on your website, or use a variety of social media tools (click on
the "+share" button, Tweet, facebook, etc.). Directions for the social media
options are provided via the above URL. Following these procedures ensures that
everyone downloads the most up-to-date, authoritative version of the report.

Lastly, in a moment of personal privilege, I would like to note that CER was
represented on the committee that authored this report by Melanie Cooper of
Clemson University and myself. The NRC has prepared slides for members of the
committee to use at conferences and in giving talks about the report. For
example, a report will be made at the upcoming TRUSE conference

http://www.chem.purdue.edu/towns/truse/

Should you wish to invite Melanie or myself to give such a report at an
upcoming
conference or as a departmental seminar, etc., please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,
Stacey
