PUBLIC COMMUNITY LECTURE:

SCIENCE FOR NON-SCIENTISTS: UMASS AMHERST PROFESSOR TO SPEAK AT
THE JONES LIBRARY, AMHERST, SUNDAY NOVEMBER 9, AT 2:15 PM

As part of a new series to bring the exciting research ideas of the UMass
Amherst campus to local citizens, Professor Harry Bermudez of the Polymer
Science and Engineering department will speak November 9 at the Jones
Library. Those interested in learning more about scientific innovations
being developed here in Amherst are invited to attend this non-technical
program sponsored by the Office of Research and Engagement.

Dr. Bermudez is a chemical engineer whose work bridges between molecular
biology and polymer chemistry. His topic, "The Locks and Keys of the Immune
System: Opening the Right Door," was recently recognized for its bold new
vision by a university grant designed to support promising new ideas in
their early stages of development. The goal of Bermudez' project is to
engineer molecules which mimic the immune system response, using an
innovative method to find the right molecules for the job-to open the right
door. His discoveries hold promise for improved implant acceptance and
enhanced drug delivery techniques.

Future Speakers in the series are Professor Janice Telfer of the Department
of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, and Professor Yeonhwa Park of the
Department of Food Sciences..

This free program is suitable for all members of the community, from teens
to seniors. Light refreshments will be served.
