for safety reasons,...why on Earth are you using KClO3,....when KNO3 could do as well and at a lower temp with little chance of detonation. KClO3 releases 3 Oxygens at decomposition where as KNO3 release only one,....either way you are making a form of gunpowder, and it should be done behind a polycarbonate Blast Sheild,... a video of the reaction would faster and safer. A 50/50 mixture of sugar and KNO3 would do, but DO NOT Grind these two in a mortar just gently mix them,..... This mixture can be ignited by a Bunsen Burner or a blow torch on a Burn pad and would show the reaction. A fume hood is also highly recommended. Cooking and Pyrotechnics sparked my interest in Chemistry,...hopefully it will do same for your students. Hope this helps, Stay Safe. Ted. (Have the tube mounted quite vertically). Then deliberately turn off the burner, count down 5-4-3-2-1, and drop an UNLIT wooden spint into the tube. As Cary relates, it burns violently, even as 2nd and 3rd do. I labelled it "what if I didn't DIDN'T use a catalyst?!", referring to the classic O2 gas preparation. I guess the use of MnO2 there makes the gas production go with less heat needed, so promotes safety. And the kid that's most obnoxious that day gets the job of washing out the tube when things have cooled down ! But I think in this day and age I'd not do the demo live with students about, especially using sugar like in a gummi bear, for all the reasons others have cited already. A better bet would be to do it on camera and show the tape when desired. ----- Original Message ----- From: nancyjeanward@xxxxxxx To: neact@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, January 02, 2009 10:54 PM Subject: [neact] potassium chlorate and gummi bear Hello. I am contemplating doing a demo with gummi bear and potassium chlorate; however, I am a bit chicken. Could you give me any info on this? Has any one done this? Thanks, Nancy Ward -----Original Message-----From: Kenneth W.
