Hi,
yes maybe, or maybe the Rohloff Speedhub. Both, but especially the Speedhub is in a different price class. Also, they don't have a coaster break - and I really appreciate the coaster break on a python. All hands free cycling and breaking!

Guess there are alternative 8 speed hubs out there - SRAM, SA or even a premium version of the Inter-8. Does anybody have special experiences with any of those in winter conditions?

I recently read ( somewhere online ) a report written by a bike shop owner in Portland Oregon. He recommends that internal hubs be lubed every year to avoid the problem Gerald found. But drier locals don't have the problem. BTW he maintains that the Alfini 11 speed ( is 11 correct ) is the only hub with the proper seals to do the legendary oil fill.

Hi,
Thanks to Stefan and Lars-Erik for there answers!
After studying the descriptions, I went on and opened the hub today. The result is rather disheartening. I expected something broken, but the Internals off the hub are so badly rusted that I am surprised that the hub still worked in three gears. The complete inside is filled with a mixture of rust, grease and moisture. The first and second gear sections did not yet come apart. The ball bearings too, are badly rusted, as are the cages. I have repaired 2 and three gear hubs in the past but nothing as bad in shape as this one. I guess I will have to give up on it and get some other hub/wheel :-(.
