Yes, I know at least one guy (Johannes alias „seilsteiger“ from southern
Germany) who has a hub motor in his rear wheel.
According to his experiences it handles nicely pushing you up that nasty hill
or gravel road.
I suppose rear wheel is simplest and best for climbing.
