Hi Jürgen,
well it was actually not very complicated. The cranks have a flat face
(on the right pedal, it is simply the chainring stubs, the left pedal
there is also a small flat face on the inside), and I simply supposed
that it is nicely perpendicular to the BB axle. So I screwed it on the
drilling machine, put stacks of wood under the freestanding part, and
pulled the lever ;-)
I can't notice that the pedals aren't nicely aligned, so this naive
method worked fine for me.
I have been using it on two tours now, and it feels very different from
normal cranks. It is correct that pedals turn faster in a natural way,
and thus I am running on lower gear (the goal of the excercise was to
use normal sized chainrings).
On the other hand, I am faster tired, but hope that it is just a matter
of adaption. This will take months to really make a conclusion.
My python is still being finished, but I/we have been very busy here to
save the workshop where I built the bicycle. It is in danger of closing.
I want to misuse this email list to plug in a online petition (this
petition is only relevant for people living in danmark):

On your website http://dirkb.dnsalias.net/pedal.html
you are writing about crank shortening.
http://asb-biomech.org/onlineabs/NACOB98/1/
is an abstract about the effect of short cranks.
How did you manage to shorten them and drill
the new pedal hole precisely?
Groetjes from Jürgen.
