I have a set of 20" Schwalbe Marathons on my recumbent trike and they are nearly 10,000km old, still have a little tread, and still get very few punctures, although some louts enjoy smashing bottles on our bike paths. The driven wheel (rear, in my case) wears very little more than the others. I think they are well worth the extra cost, just in longer life and better puncture resistance, but probably also for lower rolling resistance.
