Hello all.
To answer all...
Dale, yes it will talk in the console and the GUI.
Rill, when you install Orca, there is a script in:
/usr/bin/orca-dm-wrapper
You need to put this in the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf where the
file contains:
#greeter-wrapper=
So the line looks like this:
greeter-wrapper=/usr/bin/orca-dm-wrapper
And for Chris, yes I will do a guide to how to do all of this.
I now intend to go back to LXDE in the light of what I've learned today
and try again to get that to talk. I know LXDE is accessible because
I've had it running on a laptop running Arch. It's more patchy than
Mate though.

Also, is there any chance you could make a step-by-step guide on how to
do this so if a new image comes out we can reproduce your work?
Cheers,

Hello.
I now have lightdm talking on Raspbian Mate.
So I'll do some more stuff and then compress the image.
