Hi all! As requested, my brief introduction. I've been into Windows and Mac for
quite a while, and worked with Ubuntu Linux a bit. My Linux skills are mostly
in the commandline area. Although I've installs and upgrades from package
managers, I'm not well skilled on installing from source enough yet to know
what's going on when things don't work. I just started with the Pi about 2
weeks ago with the talking Raspbian version from here, and am working on
re-learning my Linux and Python. I'm comfortable with the Speakup screenreader
provided there, have got my localizations set, and tried a few CLI apps
successfully. My next goals are to get BRLTTY working, and get the GUI
interface going and see how that works. I also haven't tried accessing the Pi
from SSH yet, and want to make sure I can get that going as well.
I haven't yet been able to get "startx" to come up talking, but that's for a
separate thread probably. One of the things I am wondering is if I have to be
careful about what I install, at least from the package manager, so as not to
break the current Speakup process which now works so well? I would like to
experiment, but would like to keep from breaking things if possible, although I
can always re-burn the card and start over I'm sure.
Thanks for providing this resource, and I look forward to getting better
acquainted.
Kevin
