After you mentioned that it was not installed by default, I remembered that
I had to install it on the Banana PI, but I was able to run Orca with the
plugged in keyboard.
Without that, one needs SSH.
I think that without a Ubuntu Mate image specifically for the RPI Model B,
I'm out of luck for my RPI.
Thanks though for trying.

Ok, well, it then worked to let me connect to it via SSH, after having
booted it up, and having it connected via LAN cable..?

This was after had installed ssh, although still not sure that was really
necessary.

Cable, as I would not find it on the router, since the router is password
protected, and the image would not automatically connect to WIFI anyway.
I'm used to logging into SSH having used Mikes image.

Are you hooking up to 'net via hardware/LAN cable, or using wifi?

Asking since, maybe the wifi dongle isn't activating at the moment?

That's just because, while not necessarily relevant, under raspbian, you
need to edit some configuration files before it will actually connect to
wifi, etc.?

So far, no show on router.
It must be that the hardware configuration is such that it won't boot on
the
model B.
I may try my Banana PI mate on it to see what it does.
Thanks for including the SSH in your image.

Ok, like said, not sure relevant/important, but, HYG:

Ok, not sure if it's necessary to install ssh as such - from system
tools
menu, under ubuntu mate, fired up mate terminal, which orca worked fine
with, and typed in:
sudo apt-get install ssh

it prompted me for account password - is in fact 123456 - and then
seemed
to
install at least one package, and then since had raspberry pi hooked up
to
physical LAN cable, from windows 7 laptop, which is hooked up to 'net
via
wifi, pinged IP addresses ranging from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.5, until
found one that wasn't responding, and then tried using tera term to
connect
to each of them, and on 192.168.1.5, it prompted me for username -
jacob -
and password - 123456 - and that worked - remotely logged in to pi,
under
ubuntu mate.

When then disconnected, and reconnected audio jack and keyboard to pi -
only
have space here to connect one at a time, it was prompting me for the
password again - seemed to have locked direct usage while I was
connected
via SSH, but, just typed in password, hit enter, and it was working fine
again.

In case relevant - still not sure if the ssh I have now installed on pi
is
client, or server - am busy cloning the current/new version of the
ubuntu
mate SDCard, using roadkill software again, and will upload it to server
shortly, and share that separate .7z/.img file - sorry hadn't thought of
this before, if relevant.

Stay well

Haven't even tried SSH - think saw mention in a couple of places that
ubuntu
mate doesn't offer SSH by default?

But, nope, haven't even tried that - will maybe give it a go just now,
along
with plugging in the wifi adapter, or initially hooking it up to
physical
LAN cable to see what happens.

Hi,
The SD card one is the same one I have been using on it.
Can you SSH into it before running the setup?

Might not be relevant, but, this forum topic mentions CPU architecture
differences between v.1 and v.2, which might also apply to B vs. B+:
https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/ubuntu-mate-15-04-possible-on-original-pi-b-v1-2-not-newer-2-mod-b/1497

I had both a USB keyboard plugged in, along with the USB audio
adapter,
and
on first boot-up, no HDMI to VGA adapter, to try let it default to
only
using the external audio adapter, but then when had my sighted friend
run
through configuration wizard, on second bootup, had both USB adapter,
and
HDMI to VGA adapter plugged in, and when tried out using the cloned
image,
just had new USB audio adapter, and USB keyboard plugged in.

Only other thing can think of off-hand is possible micro SDCard
compatibility..?

Don't know the exact specs of the SDCard's am using, but, according to
the
computer shop tech, it's the best one for use with a pi, and according
to
the electronic copy of the invoice, it's something like a sandisk 8Gb
micro
ultra SDCard.

I have looked on-line, and I see that the B+ has 4 USB ports and some
other
differences, but the RAM is the same, so I wonder why the Ubuntu Mate
won't
boot on my model B?
Maybe there are some internal hardware differences which the image
cannot
deal with.
I have tried booting it with the USB sound card, and with the speaker
plugged into the 3.5 jack.
Does anyone suppose that having something like the USB sound card
plugged
in and the WIFI card plugged in, prevent it from booting?
I used both of these devices on the RPI with Mike's image.
