Well it is not cheaper world wide. It is cheaper here in the states. His
exchange rate is 0.047 and that makes Jaws very hard for him to get.

Hi,
JAWS is cheaper now. But, I understand why folks won't bother to use it. I
have used JAWS since 1996. Today, I am running SSH through Windows 10,
connecting to a Ubuntu virtual machine with Virtual Box. I am going to try to
ssh to my Stormux Raspberry PI 4 and my Rasbian Raspberry Pi 3 through SSH when
I figure it out and set it up. I recently had WSL2. But, when I wrote a
Python program which required sound, WSL2 (Ubuntu) would not play any mp3
files. It was quite annoying. After trying different strategies, including
losing $9 from downloading some server software, I just dumped WSL2 and
returned to virtual machines. Sigh! Ok, here is the cheaper version ofJAWS
info below in case anyone needed it:
https://www.freedomscientific.com/products/software/home-licenses/
The website did say that annual home versions of JAWS are only available to
folks in the U.S.. That is quite sad. Blast them on Twitter, that might make
a difference. Otherwise, there's got to be another way to work around this
issue. Good luck!
Sincerely,
Mike

In all fairness, Microsoft seemed hellbent on tucking the command prompt out of
the way and convincing people it was just a deprecated leftover from the MS-DOS
days for most of Windows's time as the dominant Desktop OS... That openSSH is
bundled with some versions of Win 10 is surprisingly progressive given
Microsoft's history and reputation.
As for the price of JAWS, while I've never bothered looking up the exact
cost(if I ever need to use Windows for some reason, I'll just use NVDA and save
whoever is footting the bill money better spent elsewhere), I understand
licenses cost over a grand even for Americans, so it's not all price
discrimination and/or VAT strangling the life out of European users of JAWS.
Also, as a disclaimer, I switched to using Linux full-time around the time
Ubuntu 5.10 or 6.06 came out, coming from Windows XP. I have very limited
exposure to Windows Vista and Windows 7, went blind in 2012(I had left Ubuntu
behind for Debian LXDE by then), and to my knowledge, have never used a Win 8
or Win 10 machine. Outside of an Intro to Unix corse I took in college well
after making the transition to Linux that used PuTTY on Win 7 machines instead
of a lab with machines natively running some flavor of Linux(The school in
question had labs with RedHat, so I don't know why that course was assigned a
Windows Lab), I have only ever used ssh and related technologies from the Linux
command line, and then from a terminal with a terminal screen reader, not from
a terminal emulator with Orca.
