I think that if these little boards could hold more RAM, then they would
handle a GUI better.
But there is a fascination for many of us to have a powerful little computer
in the pocket.
One of my clients was given the suggestion by his doctor to take magnesium
and zinc near bed time, and he said that really does help him to sleep.
On the non-24, if I were a total, I think I still would not want to take a
drug that affects a gland in the center of my brain. On the non-24
medicine, I think that their research was flawed, as more than 70% of Blind
folks are unemployed, and I think anyone who is unemployed is going to have
poor sleep habits.

Nothing personal. I just don't understand the fascination with running
Windows on a Pi and I think if you're hoping one day to be able to run
Firefox with half-a-dozen tabs open, Thunderbird, VLC and God knows what
else all at the same time I think you're always going to be disappointed.
The access tech we have to run places an extra burden on anything we run
it on. Even the most humble Intel or AMD laptop or netbook can probably
manage it. Particularly with Windows since the GUI is so much more
tightly integrated with the OS than the house-of-cards that is the
GNU/Linux/X11 combination.
So far I have spent hundreds of hours messing with the Pi over the last
three and a bit years trying to get it to run acceptably well to give
you the experience you want. To say nothing of dozens of emails
exchanged with the Pi Foundation and the developers when the change they
made to the ALSA driver broke espeak TTS. And I have largely been
ignored. They never had any intention of investigating what happened.
And of course when I got the OMX code going the response was pretty
underwhelming. And some folks still just grouch about espeak.
Personally I have absolutely no interest in the GUI on a Pi at all,
whether it is Linux or Windows. I can do everything I want in the
command-line, and what I can't do on the command-line on a Pi I can do
in the GUI either on one of my laptops or my main Linux machine or
Windows 7. And that's only Libre Office stuff.
I have been saying for a while that I need to write a sound driver for
speech-dispatcher which uses the same OMX libs as my console code. But
I have not done so because I know it will never be enough. We're trying
to squeeze a quart into a pint-pot. And besides speech-dispatcher is
horrible code to work with and it's bloated.
I'm now thinking it might be easier and faster to write a substitute for
speech-dispatcher if I can work out how to select it in the Orca
preferences dialog box. SD is far more than we need since the OMX code
is only ever going to run with espeak, will not need either pulse, libao
or ALSA drivers so it could be a lot leaner.
But again, I have absolutely no interest in the GUI on a Pi. If I can
get it to run the way I want then the only satisfaction I will get will
be like what folks get out of climbing Everest. I'll probably
immediately delete it again after posting an image to the site.
I was the same when I built a huge 144MHz array to do Moon-bounce
twenty-five years ago. As soon as I heard my echoes coming back the
first time I wanted to take it all down again and move on to something else.
If I sound grouchy it's because I am sick of being unemployed when just
eight years ago I was earning about $900 a day writing the same kind of
code as I can still write. But of course employers only ever see that
we can't see. And I am currently suffering from insomnia to a
ridiculous level so I am always tired but can't sleep. I guess most
blind folks suffer from insomnia to some degree.
