For text-mode web browsing, there's also links, elinks, and others in
that family. And since Orca pronounces them the same, the lynx
included in the above list is named for the cat while the links I'm
suggesting adding to the list is named for the segments of a chain.
I'm not particularly fond of either lynx the cat or links the chain,
but both are widely used text-mode browsers.
You might also want to take a look at the Adriane accessibility suite
from Knoppix. Knoppix is x86 only, but Adriane is largely a collection
of bash scripts that generate text menus that serve as a front end to
a variety of text-mode applications. I'm comfortable with the command
line and don't really need menus to protect me from command syntax,
but even with the components with missing dependencies under Rasbian
stripped away, it might be useful to new users with no prior Linux
experience.
And if someone manages to figure out how to replicate Adriane-x's
ability to launch solitary graphical applications along side orca
without launching an entire desktop, that might free up enough
resources to not need the dedicated souund adaptr or at least make
Firefox run faster on the Pi when using Orca.
Also, SBL is another screen reader for the terminal, and while I
haven't tried Fenrir or YASR, I prefer it to speakup and it's
derivatives and would love to see it running on more distros(It's what
Adriane uses for speech in the terminal, though the Adriane menus seem
to work well with the speakup family of readers.
