You'd only use an ossia staff if you need to indicate an optional passage. They are normally used to: 1. show an additional passage in a piano reduction which may be too complicated for one pianist to play. E.G. in a reduction of an opera score, an ossia may be used to show an ornamental trumpet part which is not essential but which might be useful to include in rehearsals if possible. 2. Show an alternative version of the notes written in the main staff. This is often done if there is a discrepancy between to editions which cannot be resolved. An ossia staff is smaller than a standard staff and so it is not appropriate to use this if you need to indicate which must be played. For example, if you are increasing the number of staves which one instrument is written on. In this case, add a new staff and hide the unnecessary parts of it.
