Unfortunately, I didn't have an opportunity to post this yesterday. On 1 December 1902, Magnolia Woodward conducted the first Christmas Bird Count for the state of TN around her home on Park Avenue in Knoxville (Park Avenue was later renamed Magnolia Avenue in her honor). She recorded 5 species in 2 hours: 8 flicker, 6 Carolina Chickadee, 3 Tufted Titmouse, 1 wren, 12 goldfinch. The current Knoxville CBC was began in 1957 with the circle being centered in west Knoxville. Last year we had 48 observers and recorded 90 species. In the past one hundred years, 150 species have been reported on the count. The record number of species for a count is 94. I really think we can top 100 species. On Saturday, 4 January 2003, the Knoxville Chapter of TOS will host the "100th anniversary edition" of the Knoxville CBC as part of the 103rd Audubon CBC. I invite and encourage ALL of you around the Knoxville area and the whole state (or other states) to come participate. I especially would like to encourage participation by feeder watchers in the west Knoxville area. Details on how to participate are given below. Let's try to get a lot of folks out there and see if we can break 100 species (and maybe 100 observers) on our 100th anniversary. I would also like to gage response to a possible compilation dinner the night of the count (though I hate to discourage evening owling). If you would be interested in such a thing, please let me know. For the regular participants, I will be contacting you soon to confirm your availability and willingness to cover your regular territories. I will be at the KTOS meeting this Wednesday night (4 Dec) to sign folks up as well. Maps and compilation forms are available online in Adobe PDF format at http://www-chaos.engr.utk.edu/~kde/birds/kcbc/KCBCpage.html (***NOTE: I HAVE MOVED since last year's count. My current mailing address is 1615 Meadow Chase Ln, Knoxville TN 37931. I should have the updated compilation form with this new address posted later today.) For those new to the Knoxville CBC (or CBCs in general), the count area for this count is a 15-mile-diameter circle centered at the intersection of Kingston Pike and Ebeneezer Road in West Knoxville (35 54' N, 84 05' W). Roughly, the perimeter of the count circle passes just west of Tyson Park, continues north past Richmond Hill and the intersection of Western Ave and I-640, around Karns, to Solway and Bull Run Steam Plant, back down through the western end of Hardin Valley, through the middle of Farragut, across the TN River into northen Blount Co near (but not including) Ish Creek, south around Louisville, then follows Alcoa Hwy north from Topside Road to near Tyson Park. A map of the area is available at the website linked aboved. If you would like to participate in the field or live within the count circle and would like to count birds at your feeders in your backyard, please contact me for more details. There is order to the madness and we try to be somewhat organized in knowing who's covering what areas to limit overlap and make sure good areas don't go uncovered. So PLEASE do contact me if you plan to participate. You don't have to count all day, just as long as you would like. The National Audubon Society (not KTOS) does require a $5 fee from all participants over 18 years old but in return you get a magazine summarizing the results of ALL the CBCs conducted worldwide (those under 18 get the magazine for free). The fees help to defer the cost of the online database of all CBC results at www.birdsource.org. Hope to see you all out in the field count birds. I leave you with what I'm sure is soon to be the official jingle of the NAS Christmas Bird Count: Grandma got pooped on by a raincrow, working on the Audubon Christmas Count. The compiler said she needed better details. Grandma got mad and didn't pay her fees.
