Magic happens when you least expect it. Tonight I decided to go home a different way, on a quiet farm road, for no reason other than wanting a change. Well, that's not exactly true. I do like taking little-traveled routes where I can go slowly and look for birds and other things. As I rounded over a hill, the clouds in the west beginning to blush orange-pink from the setting sun, I saw a large flock of wild turkeys in a field. I pulled over to get a better look and was surprised to count 186. I'm sure I missed quite a few that were hidden behind a knoll, and I have no doubt the actual number was around 200. It was a wonderful sight. (Just yesterday Jan Shaw and I saw a flock that exceeded 100 and were impressed by that.) Only minutes after I finished counting them I began to hear the beating of wings as one by one they lifted off and settled in nearby trees to roost for the night. Just before they did this they would give a distinct vocalization as if to say "Make way. It's my turn!", and then up they would go. It took about 10 minutes for all of them to get settled in. I was impressed how high up some of them perched. Many were in the upper limbs of very tall oak trees. And I enjoyed watching their flying skills. They would take off from the field in a gradual climb. Then as they got close to the woods they would change gears and go almost straight up into the tree tops. I will be going by later in the week in hopes of an encore performance.
