[TN-Bird] 2003 Best Bird Finds for NET / SWVA

The following were the Bristol Bird Club's "Virgil Carr Dozen Best Bird
Finds in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia for 2003."   This was a
good year for our local birders and the list has been named in honor of our
fellow birder and friend Virgil Carr who often keeps the vigil with us at
Musick's Campground where he lives on South Holston Lake in Sullivan Co.,
TN.  Virgil did not participate in determining the list.

The best bird finds:

1.  TRUMPTER SWAN by Rick Knight 

It was found  at a pond near Bristol, TN in Sullivan Co. on Jan. 1.  It was
a wing-tagged bird from Wye Marsh in Canada and migrated to our area.  Rick
learned that it returned to Wye Marsh on May 24 following one of the longest
migration vagrancies by any of their established population at the marsh.

2.  SABINE'S GULL by Rack Cross and Ed Talbott

The bird was discovered at Musick's Campground, South Holston Lake, Sullivan
Co., TN in Sept. 2003.  It was the first record for Northeast Tennessee and
Southwest Virginia.  It was the first inland record for the species in
Virginia.  Accepted by the Virginia Avian Records Committee.

3.  GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET NEST WITH YOUNG by Wallace Coffey and Ron Harrington.

One of the rare nests with young ever found in the Southern Appalachians.
It was discovered and photographed in June 2003 in Smyth County, Va as a
disjunct nesting at perhaps the lowest elevation for a nest every in the
Southern Appalachians.   No nest with young found in Virginia during the
past 50 years.

4.  BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE  by Rack Cross, Larry McDaniel, Don Holt, Dexter
Newman, Lynda Newman, Mike Poe, Allen Trently.

A bird at Musick's Campground, South Holston Lake, Sullivan Co., TN is the
second Northeast Tennessee record and second for the region.

5.  YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON NESTING COLONY AT KINGSPORT, TN by Marion
Finucane.

The region's second-known nesting population and Sullivan County's first
found along Reedy Creek in  April 2003.

6.  NORTHERN RAVEN NEST AT BOONE LAKE  by Allan Trently

The lowest elevation nesting record in Tennessee at 1,320 feet.  The first
Sullivan Co., TN nesting record.  Aplril 2003 

7.  TRICOLORED HERON  by  Wallace Coffey, Rack Cross, Don Holt.

A bird in April 2003 at Painter Creek Embayment, South Holston Lake,
Sullivan Co., TN is the third Northeast Tennessee record for the species.

8.   LAPLAND LONGSPURS  by Rick Knight

Near Limestone in Washington Co., TN were the region's fifth and sixth
record for this species.  First found in Jan. 2003.

9.   GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE  by Alice Loftin and Don Miller

Five birds found Dec. 2003 in the vicinity of Westview School, Washington
Co., TN.  Sixth Northeast Tennessee record for species.  Maximum number for
the region.

10.  WHITE IBIS  by  Carol Cross, Rack Cross, Sammy Cross

August 2003 at Middlebrook Lake in Bristol, Sullivan Co., TN.  The 8th or
9th Northeast Tennessee record.

11.  GREAT BLUE HERON NESTING COLONY  by Mary Jane Erwin and Judy Roach

The colony along the South Fork Holston River at Kingsport in Sullivan Co.,
TN in March 2003 is the 7th regional nesting location for the species, the
third for Northeast Tennessee and the third for Sullivan Co., TN.

12.  LAUGHING GULLS  by Wallace Coffey and Rack Cross

Nine birds in Sept. 2003 are the maximum number of individuals for the
region and the 10th Northeast Tennessee record.
