The imminent destruction of the chimney at the Hume Fogg School on Broadway
in Nashville is what spurred on the renewed interest in documenting
structures currently being used by Chimney Swifts. As you know, the loss of
roosting and breeding structures is a main cause of the continuing decline
of the species.

It¹s not known how important the Hume-Fogg chimney was to breeding and/or
migrating swifts, but it has been used by roosting swifts in the past. The
architect removing the chimney to build a new gym has been contacted and
appears interested in building a breeding tower on the roof of the gym.
Catherine Soudoplatoff, who has a child at the school, is spearheading this
effort and her son in preparing an Eagle Scout proposal to building breeding
swift towers to erect at Percy Warner Metro Parks.

As far as I know, there haven¹t been any towers designed to accommodate
migrating/roosting swifts, but the folks that started the official Swift
Night Out have written a book on tower construction that is available on
their website <ChimneySwifts.org>.

It would be valuable to know what the fate of this structure is and see if
there are ways to mitigate the impact.

Melinda

Subject: [TN-Bird] A Swift Night out in Lenoir City, TN

I had the pleasure of joining Denise and Tony King for a Swift night Out
count at the historic War Memorial Bldg chimney in Lenoir City, TN (Loudon
County, east Tennessee). I will let Tony post the official count--I was too
busy watching with amazement and trying to capture a bit of video to share!

This is an amazing roosting ritual that everyone should experience! In
fact, the chimney that is currently the largest roosting site in the Lenoir
City area is due for renovation soon and its future is uncertain.

You may enjoy seeing two videos of the swirl of swifts we witnessed coming
to roost last night in my current blog post:
