Thursday Nov. 8 I enjoyed watching a family of Red-headed Woodpeckers in some giant Willow Oaks I have in my backyard. This was the first time I have seen immature Red-headed Woodpeckers and at first I did not know what they were. But after seeing the parents it was apparent (haha) what they were. The young birds color was so dark and dirty looking. Only in the sun just right could you see the red tint of the head feathers. I was surprised to see FOUR juveniles spaced about two feet apart on one branch. Mom and Dad were on nearby branches observing their foraging progress. They had been nesting in one of my trees till a storm brought down the upper portion of the hollowed out limb. I was concerned for the young but it looks like they did just fine.
