Last evening, Wednesday 6/19/02, I birded the Kingston Steam Plant for an hour and a half. After leaving the steam plant, I drove over the US Highway 70 bridge above the Clinch River (located in Roane County between Kingston, TN and Midtown, TN -- DeLorme Tenn. Atlas page 42) and observed an active Osprey nest built on the support beams of the bridge. With the naked eye I could see one adult bird on the nest as I drove across the bridge. The time was 7:25 p.m. Eastern. I turned around at the east end of the bridge and came back to the west side and parked along US 70, about 150 yards from the nest. Through binoculars, I saw one adult and one nestling on the big stick nest. This nest is built right above the busy US highway, and is clearly visible from a vehicle as you drive from the west side of the bridge to the east (towards Kingston, TN) on US 70. I would advise that US 70 can be a very busy highway, and there is not much of a pullout on the west side. Great way to cap off an evening of birding!
