Linda, Charlie, and birders,

Here is some more information on the Amer. Bird Conservancy that might prove
helpful.

As Charlie points out, the American Bird Conservancy, like The Nature
Conservancy, is mostly about conservation?with a strong emphasis on habitat
conservation for birds, especially threatened species.

They do have a linkage with Tropical Birding for conservation-oriented
birding tours. It is largely oriented towards overseas tours. See their
website at www.abcbirds.org.

I have been a member of ABC for years and find that their conservation
projects are very well-chosen and appear to be effective. Also their
publications (free to members)??Bird Calls Newsletter? and ?Bird
Conservation? are the best sources of information that I know of for bird
conservation activities in North, Central and South America. The journal
Bird Conservation is colorful, well-illustrated, and covers such topics as
the impacts of birders on conservation, the benefits and problems of
ecotourism and birding trails for bird populations, birding tour companies,
problem areas in the Americas for bird conservation and ongoing projects to
deal with them, etc.

ABC also sponsors Cats Indoors, is closely tied with Partners in Flight,
issues their own Green List for threatened species in the U.S., identifies,
lists and maps Important Bird Areas, and runs their own ABC Store for
birding supplies.

I have the greatest respect for this organization and have thoroughly
enjoyed membership. If you want to feel you are doing good things for bird
conservation, as well as enjoying the benefits of membership, I highly
recommend joining.
