An American Avocet in breeding plumage was observed at River Plantation subdivision in Greene County this evening by Phine Britton, Alice Loftin, Don Miller, and Linda Northrop. The subdivision is located at the end of Holly Creek Road, along the Nolichuckey River. (I'll be happy to provide more detailed instructions to anyone seeking them.) John C. Robinson's An Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Tennessee lists only two summer records for this species: two birds in Washington County on June 19, 1977 (this is also referenced in Rick Knight's The Birds of Northeast Tennessee) and one bird in Polk County on June 28, 1987. This is the first summer record for Greene County of which I am aware.
