August 3, 2012 Duck River Unit, TNWR. I stopped in, hoping to get photos
of the tricolored herons for the ones who doubted my report.I couldn`t find
them anywhere, but I had a good time anyway! There were 85 Caspian Terns
resting on thier island. 4 smaller terns were with them,I believe were
Forsters, but not totally sure because they were so far away. I got a good
view of an American Avocet feeding along the shore, and also a flyby
Willet. Other shorebirds were Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Least,
Pectoral, Solitary, and Spotted Sandpipers. There was one lone Snowy Egret,
and several Bank Swallows flew by. I saw about a dozen imm. Little Blues
and 4 adults but no calico birds. I`ve seen molting ones many times, but
none that looked like a Tricolored Heron. Sorry about the lack of
photographs, but my 3 birding buddies and I have no doubt about what we
saw. Ruben Stoll.
