So on my way home from Norris I stopped at the Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery in
Clinton (Anderson County) at 3:40 pm. More excitement. I had just barely
gotten started when a flock of small birds flew into one of the drained ponds
on the left. There was still some water in it and in the one behind it. I
stopped the car and looked. Noticed two little birds bobbing their tails. Palm
Warblers, I thought. But no, they didn't look like Palm Warblers. Could they
be pipits? YES. I checked my field guide and found I was looking at a life
bird, actually 9 American Pipits. They weren't too spooked when I quietly got
out of the car and set up my scope. Great looks at them.

I eventually continued driving past the ponds on the left and in another one
found a large plover. Now I know that American Golden Plovers have been seen
here a couple of times recently, and I sure wanted it to be an American Golden
Plover which would be another life bird. But I'm pretty sure it was a
Black-Bellied Plover. It had a white belly, streaking on its breast and
sides, a pale crown, and it looked noticeably larger than the nearby Killdeer.
Finally made it to the upper pond to check out the waterfowl. Several
Green-winged Teal, including a breeding plumaged male, 120 Mallards (but who's
counting), a few Canada Geese and what I'm pretty sure were 5 Dowitchers sewing
in the shallow end. I ran out of time before I could look too closely up there
and I never did make it to the back of the hatchery.

Other notable birds were a Green Heron (same pond as the plover), an American
Coot and a few Tree and Barn Swallows.
